Shahsean is a 34 year old 3/4 Arab 1/4 Morgan gelding who my niece rode to championship level as a hunter pony. Now retired, Shahsean lives with me. In early June Shahsean sustained an injury to the Superficial Flexor Tendon in his right front leg. Shahsean had injured the superficial flexor tendons in both left and right front legs 2 years before, leading to a laminitis event, so I was particularly concerned when he re-injured this tendon. Ultra-sound did reveal a significant disruption of the fibers, but it was quite obvious to the naked eye, even without the ultra-sound diagnosis. (See picture below).

Shahsean was on full turnout with support wraps on both front legs, with access to his stall. The pony was obviously quite uncomfortable and spent a lot of time just standing in the shade or lying down in his stall. I contacted Hannah at Sport Innovations about using the boots to try to help this pony and she agreed that they would indeed be helpful. We started Shahsean with the boots on June 23, 2020. We used the Regenerate setting at 100% for 30 minutes twice a day for 10 days. One of the nice things for Shahsean, who hates being confined, was that I could apply the boots and still allow him to be turned out, just watching that he did not decide to go wading in the pond. Within a few days I noticed that Shahsean was quite happy with his boots on and more willing to graze when he had them on instead of just stand quietly. Within 10 days Shahsean’s comfort level had increased significantly and the tendon appeared to be remodeling.

After 3 weeks we reduced the number of treatments to once a day for the next 10 days. On 7/20/20 we switched modes to “Activate” at 100% for 30 minutes. I only did this once a day in the mornings, as I was starting to leave him without support wraps during the day but applying the support wraps at night. Once I started leaving him without the support wraps at all I went to morning and evening treatments on the Activate setting. By 8/7/20 I had stopped all treatment. Within a month Shahsean was happily cantering in to breakfast with his tail over his back like any true Arabian and the tendon had appeared to remodel beautifully. (Picture below)
